Starship Troopers: Terran Command is an excellent- if conservative- real-time strategy game and it’s Slitherine’s way of slithering into the mainstream gaming scene. The sheer quality of its presentation, the expansive single-player campaign on display, and a perfect adaptation of the setting to RTS mechanics at such a low price are enough to earn Starship Troopers a commendable recommendation on my end so I can go back and finally finish the campaign. At its core, Starship Troopers: Terran Command is about as good of a strategy game as anyone can hope for. While it doesn’t necessarily reinvent the genre’s wheel, it’s still an amazing experience from a purely gameplay perspective. Killing swarms of bugs, macro-managing your troops and strategizing your way through diverse and well-built environments is as fun as it gets. There isn’t a whole lot in the gameplay that non-fans of the genre will enjoy, but because it’s going to be a hot minute before Company of Heroes 3 launches, that’s more than okay for anyone who’s remotely interested in real time strategy.
What did surprise me was just how much depth there was in Terran Command. What initially appears to be a fairly standard real-time strategy experience soon develops with an impressive collection of gameplay systems. There are numerous squad types, multiple enemy variants, a number of outposts and base types within the world and different missions.
With only a small number of troop units available in each map, you’ll need to ensure you’re selecting the right troops, buildings and defences when spending limited funds. In contrast, the arachnid menace seems to have no end to their numbers. Rather than detracting from the title, the focus on troop management and restrictions on numbers actually make it feel much closer to the narrative of the film, with the “against all odds” nature of the Mobile Infantry’s goals.
These missions, then, are absolutely fantastic from a story perspective. They, and the game overall, nail the over-the-top but weirdly human aspects of the film/book. The title’s characters, underlying themes and overarching plot are just a smidge away from being as great as its source material, and considering how lacklustre those things are in titles like Wargame: Red Dragon, that helps the title stand apart from its competitors.
Terran Command does have its issues, though. Controlling the numerous units can be incredibly fiddly sometimes. It’s easy to send units to the wrong place, or right into the path of enemies. The AI can also be fairly stupid sometimes, as your units will occasionally stand idly in front of attacking arachnids. If you ever end up in front of the aliens, you’ll probably end up dead. This is considerably frustrating when you end up fighting Terra Command’s fiddly point and click controls, and die through no fault of your own.
This means that if one troop is moving or stationed between your army and the enemy, your teams will not be able to fire. This is one of my favourite features in the title, and leads to some great strategic gameplay, positioning and movement of troops.
Starship Troopers: Terran Command is an interesting experience. It doesn’t do anything particularly original, or push the RTS genre in any way, but it perfectly mimics the aesthetic and humour of the original film, making for a pleasant, if somewhat frustrating RTS experience.
